Johns Hopkins Presents New Research From the NYC Model:
Core Action Steps for Cities to Tackle This Under-Recognized Problem & Drive Student Achievement

November 20th, 2013, 11:00am – 12:30pm (EST)

The Summit will raise awareness about the urgent need for cities to address and combat the challenge of truancy and chronic absenteeism – and provide cities with the first comprehensive set of evidence-based strategies to tackle this problem.

Dr. Robert Balfanz, Co-Director of the Everyone Graduates Center at Johns Hopkins University, will unveil the research behind his recent analysis of New York City’s three-year pilot effort to reduce absenteeism – and present the Core Action Steps for Cities and others to drive change based on lessons learned from the successful New York City effort and elsewhere.

The 5 Core Elements covered by Dr. Balfanz, along with other leading national experts including Hedy Chang, Director of Attendance Works, are: Raising Awareness; Mobilizing Interagency Partners; Utilizing Data; Creating School-Wide Systems for Success; and Deploying School-Based Success Mentors.

I work in Montgomery County Public Schools, MD, as a Pupil Personnel Specialist. I work in the middle school that has Truancy Review Court every week. We identify those students that were truant 20% of the previous year and put an intervention in place. We are experiencing much success with our program, students’ self-esteem is improving, grades are going up, and attendance for these students is at an all time high. I work in conjuction with the State Attorney’s Office in a school-judicial partnership to give truant students a positive experience in school. I am very interested in your task-force.
